Ans: Getting into public service units such as
1.Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)
2.National Aluminium Company Ltd. (NALCO)
3.Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL)
4.Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)
5.Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)
6.Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)
7.Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC)
8.National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC)
9.Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL)
10. Coal India Limited (CIL)
11.Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)
12. Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML)
Q2 Should I get a government job surely after completing a B.Tech in IIT?
Ans: No , even after obtaining a BTech from renowned institute viz IIT , you won't land in any Govt job without going through exams /interview for that matter . At most you may get job in PSU through campus placement otherwise no Govt department will offer any job without any competitive exams.
Q3 Are jobs in IISc Bangalore,IITs and IIMs government jobs or private?
Ans: These are Govt funded institutions
They are autonomous
But they are not GOVT jobs. A Govt job is one which is part of the Govt Department
RBI is govt owned , but employees are not govt employees. It is autonomous
It is not Private also as they are not owned by individuals
ISSC , IITs IIMs are autonomous institutions
Q4 Will it be a good decision to pursue a PhD from IIT after resigning a government job in today's market? I am 27 years old now.
Ans: It depend what is your purpose of persuing Ph.D.It is for fullfillment of your academic thrust or betterment of your career.Again what kind of Goverment job you are having presently. Do you percieve to have better future after your proposed Ph.D.Also in which subject you are planning.Overall I don’t think after completing next 3 years (Geneally time taken to complete Ph.D) in IIT you will be earning less than any present goverment job.Morever kind of satisfaction with your assignment after Ph.D will be far better than any goverment job if have academic bent of mind. And age of 27 is not late. All the best.
Q5 What does it feel like to do a government job after graduating from an IIT?
Ans: I am not from IITs but yes I belong to one of the best Tier-I Government Engineering College of India[IT Branch]. It is common for IT graduates to join Service based IT MNCs (TCS,Wipro,Infosys etc) ,so did I , I worked there for one year and then joined one of state government department and working here for last 2.5 years.
Pros : I am working at location close to my hometown , I can visit my home every weekend.
Respect:- There are at least 100+ people who are under my administrative control , you'll get immense respect from local people, neighbors, relatives etc.
Housing:- You'll get government quarter wherever you are posted.
Lifestyle : .You'll get enough time for your hobbies and family compared to any pvt jobs but things are changing now a days with effective governance you are more answerable to things , So sometimes I work for more than 20 hours and sometimes its regular 9 to 5 job.
Transfer : Yes you'll get lot of transfers , on an average you get placed to a new place in every 03 to 07 years.
Location: You'll mostly work at Tier:3 or Tier:2 cities or sometimes remote areas as well, forget about glamorous city life(Malls, movies etc). This location can be a big issue if you've working girlfriend/wife.
Promotion : Mostly policy based promotions, no matter how skilled you are.
Nature of Work :It varies from department to department but mostly paper based work , the time for file movement is still a big issue in India.
Other opportunity : I see my friends visiting foreign countries , I see them changing their JobTitle every year on the other hand I see myself in the same position for next five year due to promotion policy , I see my friends learning new skills every day on the other hand I see myself I see myself sitting in the same table signing some paper after five year.
PS: The whole pros and cons points can be different for person to person , its all about individuals perception and expectation from life. When I meet my friends who've done MBAs and MS they consider my lifestyle better than them, they complain about Corporate politics,Appraisal Politics,Work pressure,Unhealthy hectic lifestyle etc.
Q6 After IIT are there any special government jobs.?
Ans: No my friend, you guys are just equally treated as Normal Graduates unless you apply for Higher Studies (in ISI or any Govt. Institute)..In Research Field & Higher Studies, you guys get an advantage over others.. But whether you apply for IAS, RBI, SBI, ONGC, SAIL,BARC whatever they don't give a damn whether you are an IITian or not... Just your knowledge will be tested...
Q7 Is an IIT tag helpful in getting a government job?
Ans: IIT tag is not important to have high salary goverment jobs. Non IIT people also make huge salaries. Money is only one aspect. The massive online courses are great, they are the best source of hope for students. Having said that IIT s, IIMs, IISc and few more are the finest places for education and the 4 years at these places convert Bruce Wayne to Batman.
Q8 What should I choose between IIT Mtech and a government job?
Ans: It is totally your choice, I assume you have qualified Gate and scored good enough to get you a course in IIT. If that is the case what I think is best is that you should join the job first as the gate score is valid for three years and it can be used for admission into the iit later on. Or if you are really very much interested in doing an mtech now just go for it. See it's totally your choice you know what you really want. If you are still confused, toss a coin choose one side for each face and while the coin is still in the air there will be a voice inside your head which is the thing that you really want.
Q9 Is it necessary to be a graduate from an IIT or NIT if you want to get a government job?
Ans: No, you need not be a graduate from IITs or NITs to secure a government job. These college tags only provide an edge when the competitor has similar credentials. If you are an engineering student, you have the option of appearing for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)[1] Examination through which you can apply for various Public Sector Unit Companies like HPCL, IOCL, BPCL, ONGC, GAIL, etc. You need a good gate score and communication skills to crack the interviews, if you are shortlisted for the same.
Q10 Should I be able to qualify for IIT because an astrologer said that I don't have a government job in my hand? What are examples to motivate me?
Ans: Studying in IIT has nothing to do with astrologer's prediction of Govt. job. You should study in IIT because they give you good education and make you a better educated person that most engg colleges in India. You may decide later to continue with engineering or take up some other area. There are many persons who after doing a degree from IIT have served in Govt. To get in IIT, you will have to study hard and perform well in JEE. Astrologer’s prediction will not help.
